Requirements — Every Email, Every Platform
1. Visible Unsubscribe Link
- Every email footer must contain an "Unsubscribe" link
- It must be visible — not hidden, not buried, not in tiny font
- Standard placement: bottom of the email, after the copyright line
2. One-Click Unsubscribe
- Clicking the link immediately unsubscribes the user
- No login required. No "are you sure?" page. No surveys.
- A branded confirmation page is shown: "You've been unsubscribed" — View live page →
3. Resubscribe Option
- The confirmation page includes a resubscribe option
- Visible but not aggressive — the user made their choice; give them an easy way back without pressure
- Style: subtle link, warm copy ("Changed your mind? You can always come back.")
4. Instant Effect
- Unsubscribe takes effect immediately (not "within 10 business days")
- CAN-SPAM requires processing within 10 days; we do it in real-time
- No emails sent after unsubscribe — automations must check status before every send
5. List-Unsubscribe Header
- For email platforms that support it, include
List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post headers
- Enables one-click unsubscribe directly from Gmail, Apple Mail, and Outlook
What Counts as "Email"
This policy covers:
- Marketing emails — nurture sequences, campaigns, promotions, newsletters
- Transactional emails — result deliveries, purchase confirmations, receipts
- Automated emails — drip sequences, event reminders, re-engagement
- One-off sends — announcements, updates, manual broadcasts
The only emails exempt from unsubscribe requirements are legally required transactional messages (password resets, security alerts, billing notices). Even those should include contact information.
CAN-SPAM Compliance Checklist
- Clear identification of the sender (Jackie Dorman / Last Year Single / Jane Media)
- Valid physical mailing address
- Working unsubscribe mechanism (one-click)
- Honest subject line (no deception)
- Unsubscribe honored within 10 days (we do it instantly)
